２００４年８月１３日、ギリシャ、パルテノン神殿。

三方を山に囲まれ、エーゲ海に向かって

開かれている歴史の首都アテネ、

街の中心にそびえる急峻な崖に囲まれた

高さ１５０メートルの丘が

パルテノン神殿の建つアクロポリスです。

 

頂上から少し下がったところに泉があり、

そのまわりには石器時代にはすでに

人々が暮らしていたと言われています。

 

午後２時に着岸したピースボートの船「トパーズ号」に

講師としてケニアからモロッコまで乗船した私は、

ピレウス駅から地下鉄に乗り込み

７つ目のモナスティラキ駅からパルテノン神殿へ

向かっていました。

 

アクロポリスへの道は、

土産物店やレストランが賑やかに続いていました。

 

「あれ、こんなところだったっけ？」。

 

張り巡らされたグリーンの金網フェンス、

厳しいチェック、大きな荷物と上着はクロークに、

オリンピック開催中のアテネの観光地は、

フェンスに囲まれ、厳しいチェック

厳重に体格のいいガードマンに守られていました。

アクロポリスは、もともと

民にオリーブの木を贈ったという

ゼウスの娘「豊穣の女神アテナ」の神域、

アテナに捧げられた神殿がかつてあった丘です。

 

修復作業が続いている神殿をあとに、

遠くにそびえるリカヴィトスの丘に惹かれるように

ゼウス神殿跡のデッキに立って、アテネの町を一望に見下ろしていると、

急に不思議な感覚に襲われました。

 

右手が風にそって動く、左手が風を体に運ぶ、

体を風が通り抜ける。

 

足元からすごいエネルギーが入ってくる。

意識と体がみるみる空間に溶けていく。

 

「あっ、はじまりはこの時だったんだ！」

 

１９７９年の春に、

私がここ同じ場所に立っていた２５年前の感覚が

ありありと蘇ってきました。

 

 

On August 13th, 2004, at the Parthenon in Greece

Athens, a historic capital, is surrounded by hills on three sides. The city faces the Aegean Sea on the other side.
In the middle of the city, there is a hill with steep sides.
The hill, which is 150 meters high, is the Acropolis of Athens and is where the Parthenon stood.

There is a spring just off the peak of the hill. It is said that people had been living around the spring since the Stone Age.

In 2004 I was traveling from Kenya to Morocco aboard the Peace Boat, “Topaz”, as a guest lecturer.
The ship arrived in Athens at 2 p.m. on August 13th.
I got off the ship and took a subway from Piraeus to Monastriaki.
Then I walked to the Parthenon.

There were many souvenir shops and restaurants along the busy street on the way to the Acropolis.

“Well, was it like this before?” I wondered.

Everything looked so different from what I had seen around the Parthenon 25 years ago.
The security was tight in all tourist spots in Athens, as the Olympic Games were being held in the city at the time.
I had to check my large luggage and jacket in the cloakroom.
The Parthenon was surrounded by green wire netting fences and watched by muscular security guards.

On the Acropolis, there used to be the temple of Athena. Athena was a daughter of Zeus and “the Goddess of Fertility”.
There was a legend that she had planted an olive tree for the people.

I could get a full view of the town and see the Likavitos Hill in the distance.
Then suddenly, I was struck with an indescribable feeling.

My right arm waved as a wind blew.
I stretched my left arm toward the wind.
The wind went through my arms and body.

I felt an enormous energy flowing into my body from the earth.
I also felt as if my mind and body had instantly merged with space.

“Oh, it all started from here at that moment!” I later realized.

I clearly remembered that I had stood right here 25 years ago, in the spring of 1979.
